Located only 20 kilometers from Cambodian border in Buriram province, Lam Nang Rong dam is a very popular attraction for local people to spend relaxing time with family and loved ones over the weekend. However it is not widely known by tourists.
In 1978, H.M the King initiated the construction of this large reservoir under his Development for Security Project not only to develop the quality of the Lam Nang Rong Basin but also to help his people by providing water for domestic consumption and agricultural uses. Nowadays this damn has become the main water supplier for the region and an important recreational site. Restaurants, accommodations, conference spaces, campgrounds, and facilities are available here upon reservation.
Activities that Lam Nang Rong visitors like to do include picnic on the waterside, enjoy the delicious food from a wide collection of restaurants, cool down in the water, and take pictures of the scenic sight from top of the dam. Moreover, only 200 meters away from Lam Nang Rong dam stands the Rao Su monument which commemorates the bravery of the Buriram people who fought against communist terrorists in the area. Another historical ground near the dam is the Nong Hong Santuary, a Khmer ruin dated to the 16th century.
Before you head back, do not forget to check out the Royal Project shop (Doikham) near the dam office to pick up some quality agricultural product for the road. In one trip, not only will you get to enjoy the view from the “Lake of Lower Northeastern,” but also learn about the history that Buriram people are very proud of. Even though it is a far ride from the city area, Lam Nang Rong dam is still another site in Buriram worth seeing.
From Bangkok, use Highway No. 1 (Phaholyothin) and turn right onto Highway No. 2 (Mittraphap) in Saraburi province. Then follow the signs to get onto Highway No. 224 and 24 (Chok Chai-Det Udom) heading to Nang Rong District. Once you reach Nang Rong District, follow the sign to turn onto Highway No. 348, turn right at a T-junction and left at the main intersection to reach Non Din Daeng District. Continue for about 10 kilometers and the dam entrance will be on your left.
