The Cathedral of Immaculate Conception Chanthaburi is considered the largest and most beautiful Catholic church in Thailand. It has a long history that stretches back with the history of the province. The most famous features of the church are the Gothic architectural style that is believed to imitate the Notre Dame de Paris as well as the Mother Mary statue beautifully decorated with the famous Chanthaburi gems.
Back in the Ayutthaya period, the area of the church was occupied by Catholic Vietnamese migrants. So the church itself is 300 years old but the main chapel has already gone through 5 reconstructions and is only 100 years old. The interior is embellished with carved wood along with stained glass windows featuring catholic saints. The ceiling emulates the shape of Noah’s Ark, and the main entrance is flanked by 2 wooden spiral staircases up to the mezzanine that is only used during important ceremonies.
The Cathedral of Immaculate Conception is not only the main holy place for Chanthaburi’s Catholic citizens, but also for all believers across the eastern region. If you plan to visit, make sure to wear respectful outfit.
From Chanthaburi city center, cross the Wat Chan Temple Bridge and go along the Chanthanimit Road. At the first intersection, turn right toward the church which is located on the right hand side.
