Rivers and Thai people’s lives have always been deeply connected. In Samut Songkhram, there are many riverside communities sitting along the Mae Klong River – each has its own unique characteristics. For example, Amphawa offers a beautiful old architecture while Bang Noi has a laid-back atmosphere. However, if you are looking for something extremely authentic, Tha Kha Floating Market is exactly what you need.
The most beautiful thing about Tha Kha is, unlike other attractions, the lives of the Tha Kha people still revolve around this floating market with or without the tourists. As soon as the sun comes up, gardeners and farmers load up their rowboats with their own crops and start heading “downtown.” There are no vendors on the side of the canal because all the goods are only sold from the water; that means their mini restaurants and kitchens are all packed in one boat as well.
The way people dress is also another charm of the Tha Kha Floating Market. Most locals still wear simple clothes of traditional dyed fabric along with a straw hat which makes the whole area look even more classic. If you wish to learn more of the Tha Kha lifestyle, take a rowboat tour to see the fruit farms and how locals interact in their daily life right from their backyards.
The Tha Kha charisma is so overloaded that many tourists choose to see it over other famous destinations. You may find that the things you bring home as souvenirs are fruits and home grown vegetables rather than a customized keychain or a t-shirt. That is just how this old enchanted community is, and let’s hope that this allure stays with Tha Kha forever.
