The stunning island of Ko Chang famous for its magnificent beaches and natural resources under the sea is surely a popular destination for beach lovers and nature enthusiasts. However, there is a fishing village on the south west side of the island that does not often get attention from Ko Chang visitors. Nevertheless once you know about it, you will not want to leave this spot unexplored.
Protected from the wind and storms by Bang Bao Cape, this not-so-little fishing village stands in the middle of the water with posts that interestingly hold up the houses in a traditional style. There are wooden walkways that connect to these houses as the way to link the community together. The town is big enough that it now has its own medical center, temple, and school. However it can still keep its charm and relaxed feeling making it different from other parts of the island.
Apart from appreciating the villagers’ way of life, visitors also like to snorkel at Bang Bao Bay. Moreover, diving schools are available for those who want to be a certified diver. At the far end of the village, there is a lighthouse sitting in the middle of the pier creating a great photo opportunity for all who visit. This pier is where you can rent a boat to go to other islands or go fishing with local fishermen for your own dinner. Some popular Ban Bang Bao gifts include shrimp paste, fish sauce, dried shrimp, and dried salted fish.
Switch your mood form tanning and swimming in the sun to fall in love with this lovely traditional village of Bang Bao. It is located only 24 kilometers away from the main pier and is easily accessible by public transportation or rented vehicle.
Follow the Motorway out of Bangkok then stay on Highway No. 344. Once you reach Klaeng District in Rayong province, get on Highway No. 3 and turn left at the T-junction onto Highway No. 3156 to Laem Ngob District. Continue straight for another 20 minutes and you will reach the Ao Thammachat (Ko Chang Ferry) pier. Another option would be the Center Point Ferry pier which is only 5 kilometers down the road. From Ko Chang pier, drive another 24 kilometers to the southwestern side of the island and you will reach the destination.
There are buses to Trat leaving from both Eakamai and Mo Chit stations. Once you arrive at Trat station, take a local bus to the Laem Ngob, Center Point, or Ao Thammachat (Ko Chang Ferry) pier and take a ferry from there. Buses that go directly to the piers are only available from the Eakamai station twice a day. Time schedules for each ferry company are available online. From Ko Chang pier, you can take a taxi or a pick-up truck straight to the village. The total distance from the pier is 24 kilometers.
